Is Your Plumbing System Ready For the Extra Workout This Holiday Season?
Holidays mean more fun but it also means more guests, more cooking, more washing and hence more stress on your homes’ plumbing system! The last thing you want this time of the year is your holidays getting spoiled due to an emergency plumbing situation such as a blocked drain or a leaking hot water system!
Having said that, there are certain steps you can take to make your plumbing system ready for the extra work out this holiday season.
Take the Necessary Precautions
1. Kitchen Drain: If you are planning to spend the holidays preparing delicious food for your family and guests, you’ll be undoubtedly using your kitchen sink or dishwasher more than usual. This means as you do the dishes you need to be extra careful not to allow oil, grease or other solid particles such as coffee grounds and onion skins go down and clog your drain. Use a paper towel to wipe up the grease and dispose the waste in your kitchen basket before putting the dishes in a dishwasher or kitchen sink.
2.Toilet Drain: There can be nothing worse than a blocked drain in your toilet. Since everyone has a different idea of using it, it’s better not to take any risks. Make sure you have placed a basket inside the bathroom so your guests have no excuse to throw cigarette butts, hair, wipes, tissues or similar things in the toilet.
3.Bathroom Drain: With so many people washing and bathing, it’s a good idea to place a strainer in bathroom drains to catch hair, excessive scum and grease.
Manage Your Hot Water Use
With your home packed with guests, it’s only natural to assume that your hot water use will increase and you probably won’t have sufficient hot water available as readily as before.
To avoid this from happening and ensure optimum performance of your hot water system, you can time your extra hot water related tasks such as running your dish washer or washing machine to when hot water is not required for showers or other regular use.
Get A Pre-Holiday Plumbing Inspection
Sometimes plumbing issues come as a surprise and dampen the fun of the holiday season!
In case you have taken all the necessary precautions but for some reason you are still unsure whether you will have hot water readily available or not, or whether your home’s plumbing system will be able to take all that stress during the holidays, it’s advisable to get a pre-season inspection to avoid an emergency plumbing situation to arise and ruin your holidays.
